Turn That Wishlist into Reward List

[6 minutes read]

Other than the infamy new year resolution, another close cousins of these end of the year topics is Wishlist.

Often times we'll hear people talked about the next vacations trip they wish to have, the latest gadgets they wanted to purchase and even a fancy new clothing they've been eyeing on. Now all that wants or Wishlist that people or even ourselves have is nothing outrageous to have. In fact it's in our nature to obtain things that bring joy to us and as long as it isn't harmful just keep at it.

Why I would like to share however is something rather mundane in practice but huge on impact. And that is the idea to change your wish list to reward list. Now there's nothing massively wrong with Wishlist to begin with I just found that it is a much more rewarding method to use the Reward List (as the name implies) than Wishlist.

With Wishlist we're pretty much just jotting stuff down on our next purchase or to-do-list. Pretty much a luxury version of our grocery list. With reward list, there's so much more to gain. A simple act of putting your wish as a reward instead would do much more good for yourself. The thing about fulfilling wishes or throwing 'joy' carefreely towards yourself have its pitfall. That deep dangerous hole is called dopamine addiction.

For those who never heard of dopamine it simply is the chemicals that being produce in your brain as a signal of 'joy'. Dopamine in general is quite common. It can come from the chocolate you ate, the feelings after exercise you had and especially that new cloth you bought. Now when it comes to crossing that wishlist, this means that you're just gonna have more and more of those dopamine. Until one point, it gonna turns to the heinous dopamine addiction that literally what drug addicts are having albeit a different source. Dopamine addiction will cost you your level of focus and makes you caved in easily by even a small attraction, stealing your self control in your life. Again, exactly what drug addicts are facing.

This is where reward list comes in as it helps put a break on that dopamine intake. With reward list, you're supposed to finish a marathon before getting the medal. The marathon could be you studying, acquiring new skills, finishing chores or running an actual marathon. The medal would be the wishlist you had, but now upgraded as a trophy for only when you finish your mission.

By practicing this, you'll eventually practicing what's called the delayed gratification. A method widely use to build self control/discipline that will results to greater success. Without having the discipline and patience to endure the bitter part of your mission (studying, working, exercise) you will always stuck with the cheap dopamine candy instead of an actual sweet trophy of success whether in your academic field, career, health and relationship.

Hey it wouldn't hurt to try right? You'd still get your new cloth, gadgets and wherever it is that luxury next vacations of yours will be but this time with a price tag. The real price tag. And I can tell you that a real trophy would taste that much sweeter when we pay the price! Imagine getting medal outta nowhere vs getting a medal after running 42km Marathon!

Start paying the price and you might just loved it.
